7 Things You Should Know About Travel Insurance and COVID-19

Since the start of the pandemic, travel insurance and travel guidelines have been constantly evolving and changing. If you are planning to travel, here are seven (7) important things you should know about travel insurance and COVID-19:

  1. When traveling within Canada, an Emergency Hospital and Medical Plan is recommended, as there are limits to the what your provincial health care will cover when you are out of your home province.  Additional coverage for COVID-19 is not required when traveling within Canada.
  2. When traveling outside of Canada, COVID-19 coverage is highly recommended.  Some travel insurance companies include coverage for COVID-19 as a part of their Emergency Hospital and Medical Plan, whereas other companies offer a separate add-on plan.
  3. There are exclusions related to COVID-19. If a traveler had any COVID-19 symptoms on or within fourteen days prior to the date of departure, or if the traveler was diagnosed with COVID-19 on or within thirty days prior to the date of departure, coverage will not be provided.
  4. Trip Cancellation and Interruption policies provide coverage in the event a trip is cancelled or interrupted as a result of a covered risk.  With some travel insurance companies, this now includes cancellation and interruption due to COVID-19.
  5. Additional travel plans can be purchased for Accidental Death & Dismemberment, Baggage, Rental Car Protection, and Sports & Activities.
  6. All travel policies contain a stability clause with respect to pre-existing medical conditions.  The length of the stability requirement depends on the age of the traveler and the duration of the trip.
  7. Remember to check travel advisories BEFORE you travel!  Coverage may be reduced or excluded if you are traveling against a level 4 travel advisory.
