As a follow up to our last post – Insurance for Young Drivers – we thought it would be helpful to share some tips for young drivers to ensure that their entrance into the world of driving is as cost-effective and as safe as possible!

Our first and most important tip would be for any new driver to take a certified Driver’s Training Course! The course provides you with necessary driving skills to safely operate a vehicle on the road. An additional benefit of taking a Driver’s Training Course is that most insurance companies will give you up to three (3) years of driving experience credit, thus saving you money on your insurance premiums.

Are you looking for a great place that provides Driver’s Training? Contact Ajay at Active Driving School and let him know that Costen Insurance sent you, or check our your local AMA.

Here are some other great tips for young drivers to stay safe on the road:

  • always wear your seatbelt
  • properly adjust your seat and mirrors
  • get to know your vehicle
  • use your mirrors and signal lights
  • check your blind spots and always shoulder check
  • keep your distance between other vehicles
  • stay within the posted speed limit
  • don’t drink and drive
  • avoid driving while tired
  • put your phone on vibrate and/or put it away to avoid distractions
  • keep your vehicle clear of other distractions (ie avoid putting items on your dashboard)
  • put your headlights on (many vehicles have running lights, but when it’s dusk or dark turn on your headlights and tail lights so other drivers can see you)
  • always pay attention
  • watch and observe other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to anticipate any possible problems
  • always look both ways before proceeding through an intersection (a green light or turning arrow only means to go when safe to do so)
  • ensure your vehicle is in good repair
  • always keep your windshield washer fluid topped up
  • brush the snow off your vehicle and properly scrape your windshield and other windows before driving

If you have any other great tips for new or experienced drivers, we would love to hear them!

Thank you,
