4 Things to know about the Class 7 learner’s licence

Scroll

Somehow, these two are turning 14 today (I’m not ok!).  That means they’ll soon be getting their Class 7 learner’s licences and heading out onto the road (supervised, of course). In honor of this birthday milestone for my boys, we thought it would be helpful to share some information on the Class 7 licence!

1. What is a Class 7 licence?

The Class 7 learner’s permit is a licence that allows you to drive a moped by yourself, or to drive a Class 5 (private passenger) or Class 6 (motorcycle) vehicle with someone who is over 18 years of age and who holds a full Class 5 driver’s licence.

2. What rules apply for a Class 7 licence?

In addition to the requirements mentioned above, the following restrictions apply to a Class 7 licence holder:

  • No driving during the hours of 12:00am and 5:00am.
  • Operator must have 0% alcohol levels when driving at all times.
  • No driving with more people than there are seat belts in your vehicle.
  • Operator can have no more than 8 demerit points before receiving a suspension of their licence.

3. How to obtain a Class 7 licence?

  • Those looking to obtain their Class 7 licence can obtain a copy of the ‘Driver’s Guide’ to study, or obtain the information online here.
  • Once the studying is complete, they can go to a motor vehicle registry and take the knowledge test.  There is a fee to take the test and ID will be required.
  • If they pass the knowledge test and pass a vision test done by the registry, they can obtain their Class 7 learner’s licence.

4. What about insurance?

  • Most Insurance Companies do NOT require you to add a Class 7 licence holder to your car insurance, as they can only drive with a licenced adult in the car for learning purposes.
  • Once they obtain their Class 5 drivers licence, they would be required to be added to your car insurance as a occasional or principal operator (depending on how many vehicles and drivers are in the household). If they have their own vehicle and insurance policy, then they would not need to be added to your car insurance.
  • If you are a Class 7 licence holder and are looking to purchase and insure your own vehicle, most Insurance Companies will be able to provide insurance but would require information on how the vehicle is being used and who would be riding along side you (as a Class 5 driver over age 18 is required to be with you, as mentioned above).
