18 Exterior Fall Maintenance Tips for your Home and Garden

As a follow up to last week’s post, here are some helpful exterior fall maintenance tips to assist you in preparing both your home and garden for the colder days ahead.

18 Exterior Fall Maintenance Tips for your Home and Garden:

  1. Check your foundation, driveway and sidewalks for cracks and repair as necessary.
  2. Caulk around exterior doors and windows as necessary.
  3. Inspect your roof for missing or loose shingles or other damage and repair as necessary.
  4. Clean your gutters and downspouts (especially after all of the leaves have fallen).
  5. Check the joints on your downspouts and ensure they around pointed away from your foundation (recommended 3-4 feet away).
  6. Weather strip your garage door.
  7. Check your stairs and railings for loose boards or damage and repair as necessary.
  8. Clear your deck or patio of furniture and cover and store as needed.
  9. Empty pots and planters of soil.
  10. Mulch leaves when you do a final mowing/fertilizing of your lawn.
  11. Drain your lawn irrigation system.
  12. Organize and clear your garage or shed to store your garden tools and equipment.
  13. Prepare your lawn equipment for storage by draining fuel from mowers, leaf blowers, etc.
  14. Drain your garden hoses and store inside.
  15. Shut off your outdoor water valves.
  16. Prepare your lawn ornaments for storage and bring inside.
  17. Inspect bird feeders and fill as necessary.
  18. Check to make sure your snow equipment is in good working condition before the first snow fall and re-stock winter supplies!
