IBAA Broker Convention 2018

The Costen Insurance Management Team had the pleasure of attending this year’s IBAA (Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta) convention in Banff, Alberta from Sunday, May 6th to Wednesday, May 9th.  The convention, which was held at the beautiful Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, had a top secret spy them this year!

As in previous years, the convention was packed full of informative seminars and fun events.

The educational part of the convention kicked off on Monday morning with breakfast and then a talk by the keynote speaker, David Chilton, the author of “The Wealthy Barber” and “The Wealthy Barber Returns”.  The title of David’s talk was “A Truly Unique Perspective”.  He shared some great stories about his experience writing his books and his time on the show “Dragon’s Den”.  It was a really great and motivational session!  The afternoon was spent attending a couple more seminars on Climate Change and a broker town hall meeting to discuss issues impacting today’s brokers.

In the evening we attended the President’s Gala in which the new IBAA President, Paul VanderHooft, was officially inducted.  This year’s Gala had some interesting décor, including a person dressed up as a shrub.  We are still trying to figure out what that was all about!

Tuesday morning started off with another great breakfast and a talk by Bill Adams from the IBC (Insurance Bureau of Canada). Nick Finn and Jamie Keey from AVIVA followed with their seminar titled “The Journey of Digitizing Brokers”. These were followed by seminars on Insurtech/Broker Management Systems and Autonomous Vehicles.

After a very busy morning, we wandered the trade show and visited with all of the different company representatives.  We also tossed a business card or two into some draws.  Andrew was lucky again this year and walked away with a $100.00 VISA gift card, donated by BrokerCore.

Since we left our families behind again this year, we headed home Tuesday evening after the trade show.  As in previous years, we really enjoyed mingling with our fellow Brokers and all of our Insurance Company partners.  We took away some great new information and ideas to apply to our business, and most of all, we had a wonderful time in beautiful Banff!

As always, if you have any questions regarding our Brokerage, your policy, or how we can assist you, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We would love to hear from you!
